"My goal is to live a life where I control my blood sugars and not where they control
me."- Arturo Gaytan, Texas

Arturo's Story
Arturo Gaytan has plenty of second-hand knowledge of diabetes. Several of his family
members were diagnosed with it and struggled with various complications. As a result,
he knew these were things he did not want to face. He didn't think he would have
to, because he always ate right and exercised.
In 1993, Arturo was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. His world stopped. He feared
he would end up dealing with diabetes complications like his relatives. Arturo taught
himself about diabetes and how to manage it.
Arturo wanted to start managing his blood sugar levels. He and his doctor talked
about insulin. His doctor became a valuable resource.
"My healthcare team was wonderful and helped me to succeed," says Arturo. They helped
him overcome his fear of needles and the sense of failure he faced with his battle
with diabetes.
Over time, Arturo realized his life was not over. In fact, diabetes became a positive
force in his life. He saw it as a reason for eating healthier and exercising more. (Note: Remember to talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program.)
Arturo believes blood sugar is manageable. With discipline, he found it's possible
to develop habits that help keep diabetes under control.
After adding insulin to his treatment plan, Arturo reached his target A1C goals. With his blood sugar levels under control,
he spends time pursuing his interests like dancing and traveling. He also likes
music, playing mariachi-type guitars and bass.
"My goal is living a life where I control my blood sugars and not where they control
me," says Arturo.
Now he thinks of each day as a fresh start. He tries not to dwell on the past. Instead, he focuses on today.
