"Taking care of my diabetes is just something I do, it's part of who I am."- Don Turney, Tennessee

Don's Story

In 1971, Don found out that he and his daughter shared more than love and the family name. They both were diagnosed with diabetes – though his is type 2, and hers is type 1.

While he could've tried hiding from the problem, that's not the kind of person Don is. "I don't understand people with diabetes who just hide under a bush or cry out, 'Woe is me'," says Don. Don had all the more reason to do something about his diabetes – and to seek treatment. His daughter needed to see his strength. And see it, she did.

She saw her dad's commitment to eating right and exercising daily. She also saw her dad’s willingness to take his medication, including the insulin his doctor had prescribed. Neither Don (then 33 years old) nor his daughter particularly liked taking insulin, but they rose to the challenge.

To this day, insulin helps keep Don’s and his daughter’s blood sugar in control. His daughter has grown up taking insulin, and Don believes he's done some growing up, too. His attitude is to fight the disease, not the insulin that helps him manage it.

Don's interest in diabetes isn't limited to his own family. He urges people who have diabetes in their family to get their entire family checked out.

Don continues to make good choices when it comes to eating, and walks on his treadmill 6 days a week. (Note: Remember to talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program.) Now retired, Don stays active, enjoying the Great Outdoors – where he loves taking pictures of nature and gardening. He's also active in managing his diabetes, and taking his medication, including insulin, the way his doctors prescribe.
